Partnership for Children receives $10k grant from the TELUS North Carolina Community Board, supporting health and literacy

Funding will provide 200 families of children ages birth to 8 with a tech-enabled, mobile and center-based program that integrates nutrition, agriculture, early literacy and digital support.

Whiteville, North Carolina – Columbus County Partnership for Children has received grant funding from the TELUS North Carolina Community Board, to contribute towards early childhood health and literacy.

“Food security and literacy skills are major issues facing families in Columbus County,” said Dr. Selena Rowell, executive director for the Partnership. “The funding provided by TELUS NC Community Board will help us address both by allowing us to implement technology-enabled mobile and center-based programs to increase access to food, nutrition, and literacy resources while giving families the confidence to use technology to meet these needs. We will work with community partner agencies and various programs to bring about awareness of solutions to these challenges that our community families experience.”
The project, which will service 200 families, will provide monthly pop-ups with fresh produce, hands-on food      and agriculture learning sessions, age-appropriate books, and access to a digital navigator, who will assist families in finding resources to improve their child’s health. The project will also provide literacy workshops as well as workshops on child nutrition.
“Through our partnerships with charities supporting children ages birth to 8, we understand the challenges young people in these situations face,” said Ebony Burt, North Carolina Community Board Chair. “We are proud to be able to support Columbus County Partnership for Children with a North Carolina Community Board grant in order to help them increase access and awareness of food resources and foster growth in literacy skills in young children.”
