Statewide Star Party: Whiteville
Join staff and volunteers of the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences at Whiteville for an evening under the stars. Explore the night sky with local astronomy enthusiasts. Enjoy fun interactive activities for all ages. Please bring a flashlight, blanket or chair to the Columbus County Wildlife Action Headquarters Helm’s Preserve located at 543 Sunset Terrace, Whiteville, Friday, April 20, 8:30-10:30 p.m.
This event is part of the North Carolina Science Festival’s statewide celebration of science. During this 6th annual Statewide Star Party, astronomy clubs, state and local parks, universities, planetariums, science centers, nature centers and libraries will host public sky watching sessions at 37 sites across North Carolina. About 4,000 visitors and 200 STEM professionals and volunteers are expected to participate.
This year’s Star Party theme is “Anyone Out There?” Star Party participants provide the curiosity, and host sites provide the telescopes. Hosts will lead hands-on activities from the Star Party kit that will help visitors explore the question of whether there is life elsewhere in the universe, how we might find it, and what it might look like. This is a free, family event: no pets, coolers, alcohol or smoking permitted. Refreshments available for purchase. Parking is limited. First 25 participants will be entered into a drawing for NC Science Festival prizes.
The NC Science Festival’s Annual Statewide Star Party is made possible through generous support of the NC Space Grant, ncspacegrant.org.
